Reducing the bias of multitaper spectrum estimates

چکیده
S U M M A R Y The power spectral density of geophysical signals provides information about the processes that generated them. We present a new approach to determine power spectra based on Thomson’s multitaper analysis method. Our method reduces the bias due to the curvature of the spectrum close to the frequency of interest. Even while maintaining the same resolution bandwidth, bias is reduced in areas where the power spectrum is significantly quadratic. No additional sidelobe leakage is introduced. In addition, our methodology reliably estimates the derivatives (slope and curvature) of the spectrum. The extra information gleaned from the signal is useful for parameter estimation or to compare different signals.

Mean square error optimal weighting for multitaper cepstrum estimation
The aim of this paper is to find a multitaper-based spectrum estimator that is mean square error optimal for cepstrum coefficient estimation. The multitaper spectrum estimator consists of windowed periodograms which are weighted together, where the weights are optimized using the Taylor expansion of the log-spectrum variance and a novel approximation for the log-spectrum bias. A thorough discus...
متن کاملMultitapering for Estimating Time Domain Parameters of Autoregressive Processes
The most commonly used method for estimating the time domain parameters of an autoregressive process is to use the Yule-Walker equations. The Yule-Walker estimates of the parameters of an autoregressive process of order p, or AR(p), are known to often be highly biased. This can lead to inappropriate order selection and very poor forecasting. There is a Fourier transform relationship between the...
متن کاملOn Spatiotemporal Spectral Analysis
The wavenumber-frequency spectrum reveals dynamic features of spatiotemporal processes such as traveling oscillatory components, turbulent structures, and linear transfer functions. It can be used to estimate multidimensional covariance, or to directly perform parameter estimation with reduced computational cost. However, simple extensions of univariate spectral estimators can be shown to have ...
متن کاملA Study of Low-variance Multi-taper Features for Distributed Speech Recognition
In this paper we study low-variance multi-taper spectrum estimation methods to compute the mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) features for robust speech recognition. In speech recognition, MFCC features are usually computed from a Hamming-windowed DFT spectrum. Although windowing helps in reducing the bias of the spectrum, but variance remains high. Multitaper spectrum estimation methods...
متن کاملNonstationary spectrum estimation and time-frequency concentration
This paper extends Thomson's multitaper spectrum estimation method [17] to nonstationary signals. The method uses a newly{derived set of basis functions which generalize the concentration properties of the prolate spheroidal waveforms [15] to the time{frequency case. We solve for the basis which diagonalizes the nonstationary spectrum generating operator over a nite region of the time{frequency...
